From Samoa to the World

Paramount Chief Olo Misilagi Letuli transformed the traditional Samoan ailao into the modern Siva Afi known around the world today. Through his performances, teaching, and family legacy, the fireknife became an internationally recognized expression of Samoan courage, discipline, athleticism, and cultural identity.

This historical record follows the growth of organized Siva Afi competition—from early gatherings involving the Letuli Aiga to today’s international championships.

1. 1992/1993 — Present World Fireknife Championships
   Polynesian Cultural Center, Lāʻie, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi
   Planning began in 1992, with the first championship held in 1993.

   
   

2. Circa 1995–Early 2000s — Letuli Aiga Siva Afi Competition
   Stadium in Nuʻuuli, American Samoa
   Hosted by the Letuli Aiga during Paramount Chief Olo Misilagi Letuli’s lifetime. Pulefano Galeaʻi and Tui Letuli served as emcees. Young competitors Jeurell and Malaki Lavataʻi were trained by Paramount Chief Olo and Tanimalie Letuli.

   
   

3. 2002 — Present International Siva Afi Competition
   Apia, Samoa
   Associated with Lee/Leota Lene and the Leota family.

4. Circa 2002 — Present Heiva i Kauaʻi Fireknife Competition
   Kapaʻa, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi
   The event celebrated its 22nd anniversary in 2024.

   
   

5. Circa 2004 —2019 Flaming Sword of Samoa Competition / Weekend in Polynesia
   Anaheim, California
   Hosted by Letuli Aiga, Tui and Maile Letuli, Tali and Larry Goeas as an early Southern California platform for competitive Siva Afi. Once Pacific Talent Academy of the Arts was Established in 2010, the Event grew to Weekend in Polynesia, featuring Fireknife Dancers around the world and an implementation of International Tahitian Solo Competition (ITO) during the day.

   
   

6. 2016 — Present Toa Afi Orlando Siva Afi Competition
   Central Florida
   An important competitive gathering for Siva Afi practitioners in the eastern United States.

   
   

7. 2019 or Earlier — Te Ahi Toa
   Tahiti, French Polynesia
   Publicly documented competition activity dates from at least 2019.

   
   

8. 2019 or Earlier — Masters of the Flame
   Utah, United States
   A mainland competition serving Utah’s Polynesian community.

   
   

9. 2020 — Siva Afi Festival Aotearoa
   Auckland, New Zealand
   Began as a stand-alone schools competition and developed into a broader festival featuring youth, women’s, and open divisions.

10. 2021 — Le Kaua Ailao World Fireknife Competition
    Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi Island
    Presented in association with the Hawaiʻi Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival.

11. 2022 — Legacy: The Siva Afi
    Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi - Sealife Park
    Established by Letuli Aiga, Tali Goeas and Malu Productions to honor Paramount Chief Olo Misilagi Letuli and the generations carrying his legacy forward

12. Circa 2022–2023 — Po Afi Samoan Fireknife Competition
    Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi
    Presented by the iSiva FireKnife Crew.

    
    

13. 2024 — Toa O Le Afi–Pati Levasa International Fire Knife Competition
    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
    The first competition was held September 27–28, 2024.

14. 2024 — Siva Afi Tahiti International Fire Knife Competition
    Tahiti, French Polynesia
    The inaugural international competition was held November 28–30, 2024.

15. 2025 — Mauka Champions Fireknife Competition
    Kapolei, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi
    The inaugural team fireknife competition was held December 6, 2025.
